☆ Review: ‘Lyonesse’ Is a Starry Mess

“We dream big,” says a no-nonsense film executive early in “Lyonesse,” the starry, if overstuffed, new play that opened Wednesday night at the Harold Pinter Theater, in London. And so, too, does this West End debut from Penelope Skinner, a British playwright whose works have long enlivened small theaters on both sides of the Atlantic. The themes arrive thick and fast across nearly three hours: #MeToo, cancel culture, the tyranny of men and many others. But not even Lily James and Kristin Scott Thomas, the production’s commercial draws, can transform the scattershot material into a coherent whole. It takes courage to open a new play in the West End without a previous run somewhere else, but “Lyonesse” whimpers where it should roar.

Studio Ghibli executive Junichi Nishioka said it was an honour for "The Boy and the Heron" to have been chosen as the opener for the festival. The film, a semi-autobiographical story of a young boy struggling with the death of his mother, is expected to Miyazaki's swan song. "Gonzo Girl" stars Arquette, Camila Morrone and William Dafoe were among the few actors gaining union approval to promote their films.

Cracking ice-cold cases, digging up former associates and unearthing decades-old mistakes by his not-so-beloved MI5 is what really gets the veteran British agent’s blood up. The slow horses of “Slow Horses.”Any season 2 is approached with apprehension, especially when a show has been as successful as this series was in season 1. But it may be even better now, with its likable misfits’ various back stories revealed and the characters established—especially Jackson, played with a malignant flourish by Gary Oldman . His character may not be quite as flatulent as he was last time around, but is just as untidy and unhygienic. (Jackson does suggest an excessively dissipated version of Le Carré’s George Smiley , whom Mr. Oldman played in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”)
